Welcome to Kununurra

Kununurra is a remote yet remarkable outback town located in the far northeast of Western Australia, just 45km from the Northern Territory border and approximately 800km southwest of Darwin. From Perth, it’s a journey of over 3,000km - a true adventure to one of Australia’s most spectacular and untouched regions.

The name "Kununurra" is derived from the Miriwoong word "Goonoonoorrang", which means "river". The Miriwoong people are the traditional owners of the Kununurra region.

Surrounded by rugged red ranges, ancient gorges, and the sparkling waters of Lake Argyle and the Ord River, Kununurra is the gateway to the East Kimberley — one of Australia’s last true wilderness frontiers. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, hiking through World Heritage landscapes, discovering Indigenous culture, or simply taking in the serenity of vast open skies, Kununurra is a destination that rewards those who venture off the beaten track.

From iconic natural landmarks like the Bungle Bungles and El Questro to unique local food, art, and authentic outback experiences, Kununurra is a place that captures the spirit of Australia — raw, real, and unforgettable.
